Owen is being treated for Leukemia (Pre-B ALL).  He was at CHOC hospital for 10 days and now he is at home.  Please pass the word about Owen on to friends and family and keep him in prayer.  We've seen how God hears our prayers.  You can express your support and encouragement to the Marcus family by email at marcusfamily@socal.rr.com.   Please understand that it will be difficult to respond to every email, but your concern and love is greatly appreciated.   Hopefully, there will be fewer reportable events in the coming weeks.  We will update the site as often as necessary, but if you want to be notified by email about future progress (when we stop updating this page), please email Taylor and Mindy and we'll add you to the list.  Thanks.

- Owen's new look.  MARATHON UPDATE -

Wednesday, September 14, 2005-  This is just a quick note  to say "thank you" to all of Owen's friends for praying for him through a great first week of school.   He was tired, but this treatment seemed to go really easy on him.  Friday morning a very hungry Owen was up and dressed, ready to go before the rest of us were awake!  That was a good sign...
Thanks for your faithful prayers -- it's awesome to think that so many continue to pray for him!
Love, The Marcus Family

Tuesday, September 6, 2005- Well.  Owen is great.  He always is, what an awesome kid with such protection and blessing surrounding him.  Thanks to each of you for praying for him as he had his first of three spinal taps which span the next 8 months, with all hopes that he will conclude his chemotherapy by May of 2006!!!

One story from today I think is worth sharing:  as tradition, we have to stop at 7-11 for a Slurpee before we come home from the clinic.  He was extra hungry today and asked if he could include a Twinkie and a Chocodile- no problem.  As I was about to fill up his Slurpee he informed me that I better hurry up because he felt like he was going to throw up.  I quickly turned him around and asked the manager if he had a bathroom.  He told me no and I asked if he wanted the vomit in his bathroom or on his sidewalk (if we made it there)........ on the way to the bathroom Owen could not hold it.  So as I cleaned up the hallway and Owen was in the middle of his throwing up at the toilet, he looked back and told me, "Dad, I will finish throwing up, you go get the Slurpee's"....  I could not control my laughter.

Owen and I finished up in the bathroom and I'm not sure what the manager was thinking as we placed three slurpee's, a two-pack of Twinkies, and a Chocodile on the counter, moments after we hurled in his backroom and toilet.

Owen has been great the rest of the day.

Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers.  Please add my Grandmother Avis Barnes to your prayers tonight as she is in serious condition at the hospital.  Keep my mom and dad and entire family in your prayers as we deal with this situation.

Thank you so much.

Taylor, Mindy, Owen, Cole, Ella, Kate, and Baby.

Saturday, September 3, 2005- Dear Owen's friends,We know there is a lot to pray about now as our thoughts are with those devastated by the hurricane, but we hope you'll remember Owen this upcoming week. He has his next round of monthly chemos on Tuesday ( a day early) so he won't miss his first day of all-day 1st grade(!) on Wednesday.  This month includes the spinal injection.  Typically, he's fine the next day, then gets progressively more tired, achy, and irritable as the week goes on.  By the following Tuesday he's feeling good again.  Pray for an "easy " round and great back-to-school- also for an unusually healthy year in Mrs. Christenson's class.  Owen is a trooper--he always handles it well.  But we're also convinced that our merciful God hears these prayers each month, and Owen has minimal side-effects as a result.  Thank you again and again.

Owen has had a fun-filled summer.  He says the highlight was camping and catching lots of fish.  Owen also just found out he's going tohave another baby brother or sister come May.  Yup.  God is full of surprises!   We feel very blessed, and continue to take one day at a time!

Now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Only 6 more months of chemo if all goes well, and we are confident it will.  Then, by March of 2008 he will be considered "cured" if he stays cancer free.  What a celebration that will be!

It's a blessing to know you're praying.  Thank you!

Love,The Marcus Family  Taylor, Mindy, Owen, Cole, Ella, Kate & baby #5

Tuesday, July 13- Owen is coming home from CHOC this evening!  His fever went down quickly and
he's in the clear for all the other testing and cultures they did.  His ANC's were over 5000 - this is great news, and we are hoping it will mean an easier time with his monthly injections and Decadron tomorrow. Owen has had a great time at CHOC, and when we asked him if he was ready to come home today he said "NO!"  (I guess that's good?)  He left home Sunday night having never seen any Star Wars movies and he's returning having seen every one of them, including Return of the Jedi at least 3 times.  Daddy thinks this is funny.

Monday, July 12- Hello friends. Last night Owen was admitted to CHOC with a 101.8 fever.  A trip to the emergency room and 2-4 nights is the standard procedure for any fever over 101.5.  Owen was actually quite excited to be going to the hospital - his daddy, on the other hand, was not (they didn't actually get into a room until 2am).  Today Owen's fever is down and he's feeling good. It's just a matter of waiting now.  We have been so thankful for this stretch of time with no medical emergencies whatsoever.  Last night was a bit of a wake up call, but we continue to trust the Lord for His complete
protection over Owen.  This fever is probably due to the cold that's been going around in our family.  If Owen's counts are low that can complicate things.  He is scheduled to have his monthly chemo, including the spinal injection, on Wednesday.  Then it's lots of pills for 5 days.  Owen's Mommy and Daddy are going on a trip this weekend so Uncle Todd and Aunt Jessi and Grandpa Jay and Grandma Myrna will take turns staying with Owen, Cole, and Ella.  They will all be prepped and ready to handle any of Owen's food cravings and mood swings :) (lots of slurpies).
Owen is having a blast this Summer playing at the beach, swimming, going to parks, Disneyland, little folks, flying kites, and soon, camping!   Last week was a whirlwind of fun with his cousins Jake and Josh and Aunt Janelle and Uncle Kevin visiting from Washington. This week Owen is hopefully going to VBS at Newport Mesa with his cousin Fischer. Mommy is happy that Owen and his siblings are still great about taking a nap everyday, as she is in week 9 of being pregnant (due in Feb!) and this baby seems to be quite healthy.  Owen is 5 now and understands why he has to do all the chemo, but also is able to tell us he's ready to be through with it.  Sometimes May of 2006 seems like a long way off.  But mostly we try to be thankful for each day and rejoice that there is an end in sight.  And Owen really is a trooper. Our compassion has grown for the many families that struggle with health issues.  We hear of more and more families with young children being diagnosed with Leukemia, and it breaks our heart. It's a privilege to be a part of God's family, to support each other in prayer, encourage each other with just being there, and hope for the next life where there will be no suffering.  We are continually humbled knowing so many are praying for our Owen, and confident we will beat this.  Thank you, again. It does make it easier for Owen.

Prayer Requests:  For Owen's blood counts to be high enough to fight off this infection.  Also that he would recover quickly and not be too worn out from Wednesday's chemo.  For Owen to have minimal side effects (over the weekend especially).  For peace and patience for Mom and Dad.  WE ARE SO THANKFUL FOR ALL OF YOU WHO ARE SO FAITHFUL IN PRAYING FOR OWEN! GOD BLESS YOU!!!

Monday, May 24:
It has been such a long time since our last update and we have been very busy.  Owen has started pre-school at the same place that his dad did - "Little Folks".  Right before he started, the family was able to spend the week after Easter on the beach camping in Carpinteria.  Owen caught his first fish, we camped under the stars, roasted marshmallows, played in the
water, it was a great time.

Owen has continued his chemotherapy with weekly medication and monthly visits to the clinic. His ANC counts are currently up and his first weeks in pre-school have been very fun.  Owen is a super big brother to Cole and Ella and the three of them spend most of their days playing together.
Owen turns 5 on May 28!!!  We are having a small party at a local park that
Owen loves to play at.
We want to thank all of you for keeping him in your prayers as he has done
so well over the past 14 months.

Wednesday, March 24-  Today Owen will go to the Clinic for his monthly chemo and labs.  Last month
his ANC's were 2400, which is great.    Happily, he has cousin Reid's birthday party to look forward to after today's poke.  He is so brave at these appointments, and though they hurt, he understands that the pokes are to get his body better.  Ella and Cole are getting over recent colds, yet Owen has again remained healthy. Thank You, Lord for shielding Owen from illness this month! Yesterday Owen, Cole, Ella, and Mommy had fun at Disney's California Adventure (photo coming soon).  We continue to keep friends Jessica, John, Jared, and Nicole in our prayers. Thank you for praying for Owen's continued protection.

Monday, March 8- What a great weekend!  Owen went to the beach and found lots of jellyfish
and even a baby stingray.  He celebrated Uncle Todd's and cousin Larssen's birthdays, and he went back to Disneyland for more adventures.  Whew! Needless to say, Owen has been feeling great.  Today he will take a great nap!  We are all in good spirits, and Mindy feels no physical pain.  Thanks for your prayers for us.  Last week was an emotional week.  This week it's nice to see the sun will be shining bright.  God is always good.

Wed., March 3- Today marks the date that will go down in history in the life of Owen and his family.  Exactly one year ago Owen was diagnosed with A.L.L. and all of us were forever changed.  Leukemia or not, Owen is a miracle, and this year only highlighted what a gift from God he truly is. What a trooper!  The year has been a challenge, but also filled with so many outstanding moments. Thankfully Owen has more than pokes and pills to look back on --  the funny head shavings at CHOC, running around at Uncle Donnie and Aunt Kristina's wedding, his 4th Birthday Bash, Mommy's Marathon, two new baby boy cousins, the real train ride with Jake & Josh,  sleep-overs with Fischer, a week with Grandma and Grandpa while Mom and Dad relaxed in Hawaii, preschool with friends, learning about Jesus at CBS, wrestling and tons of laughing and playing with Cole, Ella's first steps, being the honored hero for his soccer team, lots of slurpies, and all of the love (emails, gifts, cards, toys, pictures, you name it) from all of you. He's a happy camper! We look back and smile at the unique opportunity to have connected with other families going through similar situations.  We've been so encouraged by other people -- and to us, that's the important stuff in life.  YEAH OWEN!!!  WE LOVE YOU!!!

Thursday, March 4-
Yesterday we spent the day at Disneyland and Owen can't wait to go back and see the Snow White show again.  It was fitting to have a light-hearted day after Tuesday's heavy news.  At Mindy's 13 week OB appt. no heartbeat was found for the baby.  An ultrasound later in the day confirmed that indeed there was no baby, just a rapidly growing placenta.  News of the miscarriage was devestating.  Comfort was found partly in the fact that there was never an embryo - so no soul was lost.  Mindy is resting peacefully today after the D&C.  We grieve, but not as those without hope.

Update for 3/3/04-
Please pray for the entire Marcus family as Mindy recently miscarried.  We
share in their disappointment and grief and are encouraged by God's timing
and countless blessings in so many areas of their lives.

Thursday 2/19/04 -
We were thrilled to hear yesterday of the miracle healing in little Jake.  Please check his page if you haven't already - what a blessing to those of us (and our kids) who have been praying for him!!!

Owen's ANC's were well over 1000 at his last visit, and his spinal injection went fine.  We are amazed and thankful that he seems to be having no adverse side-effects to the chemo.  He's been full of energy lately.  He is enjoying playing soccer on Saturdays with Cole, Fischer, and the other kids from "Good Deeds from Good Kids."  Last Sunday was our first time to church with the kids since October, and the kids are attending CBS on Thursdays again. Please continue to pray for protection from illness, and please also continue to pray for our friend Jessica.

Thank you for your prayers - our home is filled with God's peace, and we live our day to day with the hope of Christ in our hearts.  God bless you! (and check out Owen's curls!)

Tuesday 1/28/04 - As you may have noticed, we are slowing down our updates on Owen.  Happily,
there is very little to report.  He is doing all the normal cute and crazy 4-year-old things.  Praise God we've all stayed healthy! Owen has continued to have weekly unilab visits (he doesn't even cry at the arm pokes anymore!) to check his ANCs.  Last week they were 900 - so we are praying they're over 1000 this week so that he can receive his spinal injection at tomorrow's CHOC appointment (this is the procedure that is every 3 months). He will also receive his regular monthly chemo from the clinic.  Since our last update Owen has been taking only half dosages of his daily chemo pills in order to boost his ANCs, and he seems to be feeling that much better.  We have continued to keep all the kids home from daycare type places in order to avoid illness and it has worked, but we will never again take church on
Sundays for granted.
It is cute to hear Owen tell other people about his Leukemia -- he was overheard telling the babysitter that, "I have cancer but right now I'm doing great and my counts are high because lots of people are praying."  He seems to understand it all and is fine with it.  Owen doesn't want the spotlight, however.  He is being honored at a program for kids in Huntington Beach called Good Deeds for Good Kids, and when they introduced him as their hero he was "so embarrassed".  Owen and Cole play very well together, and they like to pretend Ella (who likes to toddle over their toys) is their princess, or the monster.  Mom and kids enjoy the slow days at home.  In September, life will get busier as Marcus Baby #4 arrives (that's right, we're expecting!!!) and Owen begins school.  We appreciate your prayers for continued protection from illness for Owen.  Please continue to pray for health and for minimal side-effects.  God is doing great things!  We continue to trust Him for our future.

Friday 12/19 - Thankfully, Owen and his family are all healthy now.  However, Owen's ANCs are at 440 and so all the chemotherapy pills he takes at home each night have been stopped until his counts are back up over 1000.  All of his other counts are normal and the Doctor says this is typical - the ANCs go down whenever they get sick.  Owen feels great and has lots of energy.  He had a great time whacking the pinata at his brother Cole's Nemo Birthday Party on Monday.  We're so thankful for those of you who continue to check his progress and pray diligently.  Prayer Requests: For Owen's ANCs to go up over 1000.  For Owen to remain healthy over the holidays.  That Owen has a complete recovery.  Also, please keep Jessica in prayer.  She has Leukemia.  Her Dad is friend of Taylor's from work.  Click here for her page.

Friday 12/5 - Owen had a wonderful Thanksgiving with his family in Fresno.  He even got to take a real train ride to Hanford just for fun.  The weekend was cut short when all the family came down with a bad cold.  Owen held out the longest but ended up in the hospital Saturday night with a fever.  Thank you to
those of you who were praying.  His fever went down and they released him on Monday at noon, much sooner than what is typical, since any illness can cause blood counts to drop and fighting infection becomes more difficult.  On Wednesday Owen went back for his scheduled chemotherapy, and was told his counts had dropped so some of the usual chemo pills are on hold for now.  Today he is very tired and just wants to stay in bed.  This afternoon he will go to a Physical Therapist to learn some exercises to strengthen his weak foot.  To those of you with colds, we hope you are well soon!  Somehow the Lord gives us just what we need when we need it.  Owen is learning to ask God for strength this season -- what a great thing to learn at age 4.

Thursday 11/6 - Owen continues to stay well! Last Thursday he went to the clinic to have his foot checked after he'd been limping for a couple of days. Turns out the drug called Vincristine is making it feel numb so Owen has begun some exercises to regain strength. He's still running around, just a little slower than usual. Vincristine is part of the 3-year chemotherapy -- Owen receives it through his port once a month.  Yesterday, Owen went to CHOC for his monthly chemo.  Everything went well.   He will not have to have another spinal injection until February. His new routine will include monthly injections through his port at the clinic and daily pills and liquid medicine. He says he feels great! During a recent wrestling match with Dad, Owen said, "Daddy, careful of my heart, you might hurt Jesus." (Mommy was quick to write that one down) Prayer Requests: That Owen will have little toxicity from the drugs received at tomorrow's appointment. That Owen would regain strength in his foot. That Owen would remain infection-free. "And he shall be like the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, like the tender grass springing out of the earth, by clear shining after the rain." 2 Samuel 23:4

Monday 10/13 - Mindy finished!!!  She ran the Long Beach Marathon in 4 hours, 48 minutes and 3 seconds.  She finished 869th out of 1757 runners.  She finished 35th in her age group.  She proudly wore a picture of Owen on her jersey throughout the race.  We are so proud of her and her discipline over the past several months.  Thank you for those who helped her raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  What a great cause.  What a special guy to run for.  What a great day.

Saturday 10/11/03- Owen is feeling well and enjoying lots of fun with the whole Marcus clan
this weekend.  On Wednesday he received his monthly chemo treatment, and a new treasure from the treasure chest at CHOC (mostly old happy meal toys, but he loves this!).  He went to his CBS class on Thursday and was fine.  Aside from a little more tiredness and feeling more frustrated when things
don't go his way, Owen does not seem to have any side-effects in these days after his treatments. He is enjoying the last few days with cousins Rekha and Neena before Uncle Tom, Aunt Sara and the girls move to Costa Rica on Wednesday.  Mindy will run the Long Beach Marathon on this Sunday.  The race starts at 8:15, so at about 11:45 think of her as she "hits the wall" on mile 20.  Owen is looking forward to cheering her on! Praise Reports:  Owen is having little side-effects and his ANCs have
remained over 1000.  Owen is adjusting to being around kids again and learning to get along and follow directions in a group setting.  There have been no fevers during this first month of being out and about! Thank you, Lord!

Tuesday 9/30/03 - Since our last update Owen has been doing great!  He is full of energy most of the time and his head is cute and fuzzy now that hair is growing back.  He did not have any noticeable side-effects after the chemo appointment and week of pills that usually make him grumpy.  Life is getting back to normal.  Owen has stayed well after going to CBS once a week.  He has also just joined a co-op preschool group with 8 friends that will meet once a week.  He is thrilled to be interacting with friends again, and very good about
washing his hands all the time. Owen's next chemo appointment is Oct. 8th, and then he is scheduled to go back 3 months later.  During those months he will be taking pills and liquid medicine.  This cycle will continue for the next two years.  Owen is a champ when it comes to taking medicine, and so glad to not have pokes that often!  We're looking forward to smooth sailing from here on out.   This month Owen went to the Fresno Zoo with Grandma Myrna, had a sleep-over with cousin Fischer, and learned the first 2 letters of zoo-phonics!  He will cheer for Mommy when she runs the Long Beach Marathon in two weeks. Over $4000 was raised for Leukemia research.  Thanks!  We're praising our Lord for Owen's progress - we've made it through the hardest part thanks to prayer and support from our family in Christ.  God is faithful!  Prayer Requests: For protection from infection (no fevers).  For Owen's physical, social, and spiritual development.  For blood counts to stay high. For complete recovery.

Tuesday 9/9/03 - Praise Report: Owen's ANC's were over 2000 so we will begin the next phase tomorrow with an LP at CHOC.  Thanks for praying!  Prayer Requests: For little toxicity from the chemo drugs.  For peace for Owen during the procedures.  For Thursday's Noah's Ark class at CBS.  For Taylor and kids as Mindy is away at a retreat in Palm Desert this weekend.

Thursday 9/4/03 - Owen's counts were still not high enough to begin the next phase of chemotherapy.  His ANCs were at 420 and they need to be over 1000. He remains in good spirits!  He is hoping his counts will be high once he's on maintenance so he can go to his Noah's Ark class at Community Bible Study with Mommy on Thursday mornings.  Praise Reports:  Owen remains infection free and is feeling good.  His platelets and red blood counts have continued to go up.  Prayer Requests: For ANCs to be over 1000 next Monday.  For continued protection from infection.  Please pray for Owen's relative Kyle in Colorado who has recently been diagnosed with a slight case of Tourette's Syndrome, and is facing embarrassment at school.   Thank you for continued prayer.  God is faithful!  NOTE:  Mindy is up to running 18 miles...Wonder Woman!!!

Wednesday 8/27/03 - Owen's counts are going back up!  Last week Owen went back to CHOC for a
second round of blood transfusions.  He was admitted last Tuesday night and came home early Wednesday morning.  Yesterday he went to unilab for blood counts and his red blood and platelets are back in the safe range so there will be no transfusions this week.  His counts overall are low, including
his ANC's, which means there's lots of hand-washing going on and no public places for Owen this week.  He's been  playing tow-trucks and "construction site" with Cole all morning. They're careful to watch out for little Ella who is scooting all over the place.  Owen is happy to be home in a house
scattered with toys!  Praise Report:  That Owen's blood counts are up.  That he's remained infection-free despite low ANC's.  That there were no complications during blood transfusions.  His chest X-ray from 2 weeks ago came back clear.  Prayer Requests:  For continued protection from infection / no fevers.  That Owen's ANC's would be high enough to begin the "maintenance" phase next week.  For complete recovery.

Thursday 8/14/03 - Yesterday, after a 9am phone call that Owen's platelets and red blood counts were extremely low, Owen had a long day at the hospital for a blood transfusion and an X-ray for a possible infection.  It was a surprise visit so Owen was not prepared and not very happy during the procedures.  He was
thrilled, however, by CHOC playroom's cool new roller coaster that goes all by itself on the tracks.  Thankfully, Owen can move around and play during the all-day process.  He also enjoyed a visit from the Vanden Heuvel family, who were in town for the day!  Today he is a new boy-- full of energy and much more color in his face.  The need for blood transfusions is normal (from the chemo, not the cancer) and will continue occasionally throughout the rest of Owen's 2-year chemotherapy.  Cole (age 2) missed his brother and daddy, and was happy to go see them later in the day at the hospital. Praise Report: Owen has remained infection-free, even with low ANC's.  There were no complications from the blood transfusions.  Prayer Requests:  That the chest X-ray (due to Owen's cough) would come back clear.  For Owen's continued protection from infection. That Owen's blood counts will stay up. That the whole family, especially brother Cole, would have God's peace.

"When I said, 'My foot is slipping,'
your love, O Lord supported me.
When anxiety was great within me,
your consolation brought joy to my soul."  Psalm 94:18-19

Thursday 8/7/03 - Today Owen received more ARAC at the clinic -- only 2 more days to go.  His ANC's were at 2400, but his red blood is a little low.  After Saturday he will have a 20-day break from chemo until the next phase (maintenance) begins.  Maintenance is a two year process with monthly hospital visits (instead of weekly).  Owen is almost through the hardest part!  He has been feeling great and chugging along as normal.  The doctor said to stay out of crowds for the next couple of weeks as his counts are expected to go down.
Today he chose a book from the treasure chest called "I Stink", which he thought was hilarious.  It's about a garbage truck.  Praise Reports: Praise for high ANC's!  Owen has not complained of nausea, he's eating well, and doesn't complain of pain.  Prayer Requests:  That his hemoglobin blood counts would go up -- no transfusions needed.  For high ANC's and continued protection from infection.  That there would be little toxicity from drugs.  For Owen's complete recovery.

Saturday 8/02/03 - Praise Report: Owen has yet to show any signs of nausea from the ARAC.  He
was fine with his port being accessed, and is happy the "tubies" are out and he can wrestle Cole until next Wednesday.  He's had a cheerful heart today!  Prayer Requests:  For continued protection from infection.  For Owen's complete recovery.

Wednesday 7/29/03 -
Today Owen had a long day, starting at the clinic for a check-up and then to CHOC for 12 hours!  First, he received lots of fluid  so he would be hydrated for the chemo drug.  Then he had a spinal procedure (which meant he couldn't eat until 3 pm!) and came out of that with the "sillies".  It took one hour for the new drug and then a six hour drip to protect his kidneys from some of the side-effects.  Through it all, Owen was a champ!  He passed the time playing with his gameboy, visiting the playroom, reading books, and watching videos while eating chips in bed (the best part).  At 10pm we left for home with Owen's port still accessed, which means no poke (shot) for tomorrow's  appointment, but he's not used to leaving those "tubies" hanging from his chest (and no wrestling with Cole).  Owen will visit the clinic each day for more chemotherapy until Saturday.  Special thanks to Grandma Karen for her love and care for Cole and Ella during the appointments (and for conquering all the laundry.) Thank you also to those delivering meals these next two weeks- what a blessing!  Praise Report:  Owen's ANC's are up to 1560.  No nausea for Owen--today was a breeze! Praise for protection and healing from cold.  Nicole is home and doing well.  It's been a week of more miracles!  Prayer Requests:  That there would be little toxicity from the ARAC drug given over the next three
days.  That Owen will be comfortable with his port accessed for the next three days, and that there wouldn't be any complications at home with that.  For continued protection from infection.  For Owen's complete recovery. Also, please pray for healing for 3 year-old Mossimo who is at CHOC on life-support after coming down with a strep/ cold.  His parents are believers and have asked for prayer.

Saturday 7/26/03 - Today Owen came to the park to meet Mommy's running team after their 14 mile
run (Mindy has decided to train for the whole marathon instead of the half!).  He's feeling good, but fighting a cold.  He loves to check the mail lately, so if you really want to make his day, send him a letter (8951 Albatross Dr. Huntington Bch 92646).  Prayer requests : For a quick recovery from this nasty cold for Ella, Cole, Taylor, and Owen.  That Owen won't develop a fever, and that counts will remain high for Wednesday's procedure.

Wednesday 7/23/03 -
Owen had a great check-up.  The doctor said the rash is common and to
continue with the Desitin.  Thankfully, he doesn't have to take the drug that causes that anymore. After his check-up Owen and Mommy went to CHOC and got to meet email friends, Jenny and Nicole Evans, in person.  What a treat!  Owen had another head-shaving party today.  Bald is beautiful!
Praise Report: Owen's ANC's are up to 900.  Prayer Requests: For continued protection from infection.  For self-consciousness with hair loss.  For rash to be completely healed.  For counts to be high enough (1000) next week to begin next phase of chemotherapy.  For Owen's complete recovery.  Please pray for Nicole who is also battling A.L.L. - that she would be healed quickly from infection and have no further complications during her chemotherapy.

Tuesday 7/22/03 -
This morning Owen had blood drawn (a poke in the arm) and was very
cooperative, thinking about the slurpy he'd get afterwards.  He proudly reported to brother Cole that he didn't really cry this time.  Tomorrow he goes to the CHOC clinic for a check-up (but no pokes!)  We have one week off of all the drugs before the heavy duty stuff starting next Wednesday (July 30th).  Owen has been tired --he's been making the most of Blockbuster's Free-Kid's-Movies deal.  His hair is patchy now, but he still has quite a bit (he hasn't noticed it coming out).  Today he was surprised by the showing of sister Ella's first tooth!  Praise Reports:  Owen's spirits are up today, and he has remained infection-free through this week with low ANC's.  Praise for God's peace and overwhelming love.  Prayer Requests: For rash/blisters on bottom from drugs to clear up.  For Owen's discomfort to be eased.  For counts to go up, and moods to stay up.  For Owen's complete recovery.

Saturday 7/19/03 -
Today Owen started losing his hair (this is 5 months after the head-shaving party).  He is feeling pretty rotten, but hanging in there.  Mommy held him while vomited and afterwards he felt better.  He's still craving Fritos, but they have to be from 7-Eleven. Thank you to all who continue to faithfully check this site and pray for Owen.  The Joy of the Lord is our strength!

Friday 7/18/03- Today Owen is feeling the effects of his chemo.  He had  Mommy driving all over town to curb his current cravings. After a bagel, two bags of Fritos and a smoothie he was smiling again.  Yesterday, he was "frustrated" he didn't get to go play at Bible Study, but he was thrilled to have cousin Fischer over for a play-date instead.  We are on increased germ-patrol as ANC counts are down to 456.  Praise Reports:  Owen is understanding more and more about what's going on inside of him and talking about his feelings.  He is sleeping well.  Daddy is home!  Prayer Requests: For protection from infection.  For minimal side-effects. For peace and comfort during this round of heavy chemo.  For Owen, Cole and Ella to all feel completely loved and secure.  For Owen's complete recovery.

Wednesday - 7/16/03 - Owen is presently at the hospital receiving his "poke".  He was cheered up afterwards by the special treat of spraying his mother with a syringe of water.  He is now relaxing and in good spirits watching Pinocchio.  He has a lot of pills to take this week.  Praise Report:  Owen's ANC counts are up to a good high of 4400.  Special thanks to Figi Water for their generous donation towards Mindy's half marathon sponsorship.  Also Mindy would like to thank Jenny Evans who has been so helpful by giving them a head's up on what to expect at every stage of Owen's treatment as Jenny's daughter has been going through the same regime but is a couple of months ahead of him.  Her support and friendship has been invaluable. Prayer Requests: For ease in handling all the medication and accompanying moods in the next week, especially with his father out of town for the first part of it.  For Owen's complete recovery.

Saturday 7/5/03 - On Wednesday Owen began his new chemo regime, starting with a spinal injection, two injections administered through his port and some new pills.  He's handled it like a champ.  Today he is back at the hospital for another two "pokes" in his legs.  He was happy to have Grandpa Jay in town to come with him.  Although he has been sleepy, Owen was determined to stay awake to see the fireworks.   He had a great 4th of July, swimming and goofing off in the sun!  Prayer Requests:  That he will be able to sleep.   For minimal soreness in his legs.  That he will have very little toxicity from the new chemo regime.    Praise Report: Owens ANC counts needed to be at 1000 to start the new treatments and that is exactly what they were!  Marathon Donations:  Thanks to the many who gave and were matched by the anonymous donor.  Mindy, Owen and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society appreciate you!

Wednesday 6/25/03 - Owen received the results from his blood tests and unfortunately his ANC counts were too low to start his next phase of treatments.  They will be delayed until after next Tuesday's test. Prayer Requests: That Owen's counts go up quickly.  That he stays free of infection.  For Owen's complete recovery.

Sunday 6/22/03 - Owen had a good visit at Hoag, due in great part to a fantastic nurse.  (It is interesting how our reaction to life's events are mostly influenced by those around us.  Being sick and being in a hospital can be OK when the right person is there with us.  Maybe we could all be a "fantastic nurse" to those around us this week?)  His EKG was normal and we await treatments at the hospital on Wednesday and Saturday.

Thursday 6/19/03 - Tomorrow (Friday), Owen is scheduled for an EKG and Cardiogram at Hoag hospital to monitor his heart before the next phase of chemo begins. He will start the "Delayed Intensification" phase of chemo next Wednesday and one of the medications can cause heart irregularity.  The next two months will consist of more frequent hospital visits for chemotherapy, and possibly more side effects for Owen.  Thank you for your continued prayer.  Owen has amazed us by his minimal side-effects, including not losing any hair yet! Prayer Requests:  Please pray for Owen at his appointment tomorrow, that he would not fear the Doctors or being at a new hospital.  Pray for minimal side-effects for the next chemo regimen and continued protection from infection.  Pray for a complete recovery.

Monday 6/9/03-  Happy to report that Owen is over his cold and made it through with no fevers, which would have meant at least 48 hours in the hospital.  He is doing well with this month's chemo regimen. Mindy has decided to run the Long Beach Marathon with Team in Training to raise money for Leukemia Research.  Owen and 8 year old Devon Oddy of Huntington Beach are her "patient heroes".  She's plenty sore, but enjoying the training so far!  The Marathon is in October and if you would like to support her, click herePrayer Request: For God's continued protection over Owen from any infections. That Owen would have a complete recovery.

Wednesday 5/28/03- Happy Birthday Owen!!!  Owen turns 4 today and he is celebrating with a trip (Grandpa Harold is going along) to CHOC for a spinal check and the start of a new month of chemo.  Owen was excited to go back to CHOC as he looks forward to his "special" bed.  What a trooper. Special thanks to Polly Pelly, a photographer from Santa Barbara, who donated her talents to the family.  Prayer Requests:  That Owen's cold goes away.  That the new chemo goes well.  That his counts remain high.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Wednesday 5/14/03- Owen has remained healthy and full of joy.  Thank you to those who continue to pray!  He is now a pro at swallowing the chemo pills (in a spoonful of soy ice cream).  He is excited about seeing his cousins, Jacob and Joshua, at Uncle Donnie and Kristina's wedding this weekend.  Prayer Request:  That God would protect Owen from all viruses and infections this weekend.  That cousins, Jacob and Josh, will be healthy so all the children can play together freely.  That Owen's counts will remain high.  For Owen's complete recovery.

Friday 5/2/03 - Owen's progress is terrific.  His ANC count is over 4000.  He is feeling very well.  On Wednesday he started a new chemo protocol, which should provide for a smooth month with no hospital visits. He picked out a caboose out of the treasure chest at CHOC after he received his "poke."  He then proceeded to have two very noisy days playing with his brother, Cole and their cousin, Fischer.  They are a happy bunch, playing with trains and Rescue Heroes.  Prayer Requests: That the new treatment will be kind to his body.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Monday - 4/28/03 - We are very sad to report that 4 year old, Trevin Dilfer died yesterday.  He had been battling heart disease for 40 days.  ESPN News report from the Dilfer family: "He was a very brave young boy and we are comforted in the knowledge that as a child of God he has returned to his Maker.  We grieve but not as those without hope."  Thank you for praying for Trevin  and his family.    Please keep his family in your prayers during this time of sorrow.

Friday 4/25/03 - Praise Report: Wednesdays tests went very well for Owen.  His ANC is even higher than last time at 2600.  He has the excellent news of being put on the easiest chemo path available.  Owen is doing great and in good spirits.  The rest of his family is enjoying good health.   Prayer requests:  For Owens complete recovery.

Wednesday 4/23/03 Praise Report:  Owen had a wonderful Easter with his family at Grandma and Grandpa Marcus' home, finding lots of Easter eggs, candy and Yellow Peeps.    Prayer request: For continued protection from illness.  For Owen's complete recovery.

Saturday 4/19/03 -  In this case, no news is good news!  Praise Report: Owen has remained infection-free!  Ella did not have Roseola-- it was a viral rash and she is fine now.  Wednesday's spinal injection went well and Owen was in good spirits on Thursday.   The results from the lab tests show his blood counts have gone up--this is great news!  Highlight of last weekend was spending time with Grandpa Jay and Grandma Myrna.   Owen is looking forward to finding lots of eggs tomorrow.  Happy Easter!  He is Risen!  Prayer Requests:  For peace at Wednesday's spinal injection.  For soreness in legs and feet to decrease.  For blood counts to continue to go up.

Friday 4/11/03 5PM - Ella is back from the Doctor and there is a possibility she has Roseola.  (Cousin Larssen also probably has it.)  This is not a huge deal for her or Owen, but the doctor still wants them isolated from each other.  Grandpa Jay and Grandma Myrna are coming to town for the weekend, so it should be great fun for the kids.

Friday 4/11/03 -Owen's blood counts from Wednesday are in.  Everything is fine and his ANC counts are still over a thousand!  Ella will go to the doctor this afternoon.  The boys have been running around in the backyard since 8:00 this morning-- Owen is feeling "great".    Prayer Request: That Owen has a complete recovery.

Monday 4/7/03 - New Photos Prayer Request: Little Ella has a fever, so please pray for her recovery and that Owen will not catch it.  Recently, when Owen was feeling pretty lousy, his Great-Aunt Sherry told him that he would only feel crummy for a short while.  Owen answered, "Yeah, I'm going to get better because lots of people are praying for me."  His attitude is a direct result of having so many people praying for him.  We continue to be overwhelmed by the love and support from so many.  It is amazing how life can be rolling right along, without a hitch, and then present a wrinkle like an illness.  The outpouring of prayer and encouragement is such a reinforcement for our family.  We could not handle these days without God's people holding up our arms and our hearts.  Read the story in Exodus 17:8-16.    Owen will receive spinal injections on Wednesdays this month, which are uncomfortable the next day.  Let's pray that his discomfort is reduced and please continue to pray for high blood counts -- we will usually have results on Thursdays.

Thursday 4/3/03 - Praise Report: Owen received very good news from his test results.  His blasts (Leukemia counts) are at zero.   His ANC is very high (1700 plus) which is great.   He swallowed his new pill just fine.  Owen is one proud lad. He set the table all by himself even pouring all the milk and the waters.   Prayer Request: That his blood counts stay high.  That he has minimal side effects  from his new round of chemo.  (expected side effects are loss of appetite and lowering of blood counts)  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Wednesday 4/2/03 - Owen's counts were up, so he began the next phase of treatment.  He'll now take a pill, by mouth, every evening.  Let's pray that this goes smoothly.  He was very happy today, especially while eating his Happy Meal after the visit at CHOC.

Tuesday 4/1/03 - New Photos Prayer requests - That Owen's counts are at a level which will allow him to start the next treatment protocol on Wednesday.  That he still have strong resistance to illness.  Praises - His first round of protocol was a huge success.  The side effects were minimal.

Saturday 3/29/03 - Owen had some great surprises from the Obatake family (www.lucyann.com) and the Epting family (www.chrisepting.com).  These are yet more examples of people who have given so much love and support.  We really appreciate it and it really lifts Owen.  He loved his new toys so much, he didn't want to help Taylor do chores in 85 degree weather.  (It sounds as if things are getting back to normal.)

Friday 3/28/03 - Owen's ANC counts are over 1700, much higher than the average for Leukemia/Chemo patients.  This is fantastic.

Thursday 3/27/03- 4 PM - Praise God!  Owen's counts are up from last week which means he has more energy and a greater capability of fighting off infection. Thank you for continuing to pray for Owen's complete recovery .  Trevin is not doing well.  He desperately needs a heart.  Pray for peace for his family and that Trevin's life will be sustained.

Wednesday 3/26/03 5 PM - Great news for Trevin.  He has normal brain activity and his body has had a turn around.  The Dilfer family is waiting for a heart for a transplant. His progress has been miraculous, thus far.  For those who have been praying, thank you.  Let's continue to pray for God's goodness for him and his family.  Owen's tests results will be available tomorrow.  He did not have a bone marrow aspirate today.

Tuesday 3/25/03 - 3 PM- Owen is scheduled for his tests tomorrow including the bone marrow aspirate and spinal tap. Today, Owen was very happy to be with his cousin Fischer and Aunt Tracy described him as the most joyful 3 year old she has ever seen.  He was sweet, happy and well mannered.  Prayer Request: That Owen's blood counts remain good and that he has no need of a transfusion.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Monday 3/24/03 - 2 PM - Trevin made it through the weekend, but his heart and lungs are being sustained by machines.   The family is still praying for a donor heart and that there is no brain damage.  Owen had a great weekend.  He and Cole played with their cousins, Chandler and Fischer on Sunday.  Owen was very animated and showed no signs of treatment.  Things are going very well and Ella seems to have shaken whatever was going on earlier.

Friday 3/21/03 - 2 PM -We would ask that everyone be praying for Trevin Dilfer.  He is a friend of Mindy's family in Fresno.   His little heart is not doing well.  He will need a miracle to save his life.  Praise report-  Owen's blast (Leukemia count) is now 2%.  This is terrific!!!  Please pray that Ella's cough and cold clears up and Owen does not catch it.

Thursday 3/20/03-4:30PM- We will not be getting the test results till tomorrow.  Stay tuned.

Thursday 3/20/03 - 11:30 - Owen and family would like to thank Auntie Lisa for delivering the books made by Miss Siegel's 5th & 6th grade classes from Brywood Elementary in Irvine for Owen.  He is enjoying them very much.   Prayer Request: Grandma Myrna called from Fresno this morning asking for prayers for a friend of hers' son.  Trent and Cass Dilfer's 4 year old boy Trevin is fighting for his life at Valley Children's.  He has a heart problem due to a virus.   Your prayers will be very much appreciated.  Owen has offered one of his own for Trevor:  That he is brave.  That the doctors fix his heart.  That he gets to pick a toy from the treasure chest.   Check back later this afternoon for the results from Owen's bone marrow tests.

Wednesday 3/19/03 5 PM - Owen's blood counts are good and his ANC is up to 650.  This is excellent news.  Owen was quite the comedian as the anesthetics wore off this afternoon.  Because his energy and health are improving, the transition from sedation to wide awake makes him silly.  A special thanks to Rock Harbor Nurture group for providing goodies that serve as rewards after procedures.

Wednesday 3/19/03-3 PM -Today at 2:00 was Owen's bone marrow aspiration.  The results will probably not be available until tomorrow.  Grandma Karen struck up a conversation with a customer at Long's Drug and while they were talking she noticed a picture of Owen on the woman's keyring!  What a blessing it is that so many are praying for Owen.   All of the folders passed out at the Community Bible Study conference (including 500 leaders from all throughout California) had a picture of Owen on them.

Tuesday 3/18/03-2 PM - Owen received the rest of his lab results and all his blood counts are good.  His red blood count is a bit low.  The best news is that his ANC counts which measure his ability to fight off infection are up to 250.  They had been as low as zero.  Normal ranges are from 500-1000.  Owen's appetite is strong, even though the medications usually suppress appetite.  At the dinner table, Taylor told Owen that he had been a good boy.  Owen corrected him that he had been VERY good boy.  For exercise, Owen walks up and down the street.

Monday 3/17/03-2 PM- Owen had a great weekend.  He really enjoyed the cards and stickers he received from the Girl Scout troop in Illinois.  He seems to be stronger and more active with each day.  Today he was very brave at the clinic where they took more blood.  Wednesday at 2:00 he will go back to CHOC for the bone marrow aspiration and spinal tap.  Aunt Janelle flies home tonight.  She will be missed!  Praise report- No moodiness from chemo-if anything he's more cheerful!  Praise God for those providing meals and babysitting.  Praise for many prayer warriors and their encouragement.  Prayer request- For ANC counts to go up.  For continued protection from infection, especially at clinic appointments.  For procedures on Wed.- that blasts (cancer) to be 0%.  For day to day peace as family settles into routine.  For healing for Owen's friends from CHOC, John and Danny.  For Owen to have a complete recovery.

Friday 3/14/03 - 5 PM - Owen had another good day.  He took a walk down the street and found his way back on to his pre-Leukemia eat/play/nap/sleep schedule.  Owen's tummy and GI issues seem to be back on track as well.  MOPS of Newport Mesa brought over some wonderful goodies.  Thank you.  Prayer Requests:  That Owen's Leukemia count reduce to 0%.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Thursday 3/13/03   - 4:30 PM    Praise Report: Owen got his test results back from the bone marrow aspiration and his leukemia count is down to 9% from 64%.  That is very good news.  The goal for now is 5% so he will be tested again next Wednesday.  The lab results are in as well and Owen's blood counts (including white blood cells, hemoglobin and platelets are all in the normal range.  Platelets are a little low but still within the normal range).  This all very good news.   Everyone is happy to be back home.  On the drive home from the hospital Owen wanted a shake and when asked what flavor he responded no to chocolate.  Strawberry? No. Vanilla? No.  What flavor?  Green.  Luckily Mindy knows what that means but after two trips to McDonald's they were told Orange County is out of Shamrock shake mix.  Wise Mindy bought a vanilla and didn't let him have it to until she had snuck a couple of drops of food coloring into it.  Unfortunately Owen is not so easily fooled and it was not the shake he had in mind.  Prayer Request: That Owen has a complete recovery.

Wednesday 3/12/03 - 6:00 PM - Owen and family are home.  He is very happy to be reunited with his brother, Cole.  Tomorrow they will go back to CHOC for lab work and find out about the results of the bone marrow aspiration and the spinal fluid check.  Then they will have a week of rest at home.

Wednesday 3/12/03 - 12:30 PM - Praise Report:  Owen does not have the chicken pox.  When Taylor asked Owen if he was ready  to go home he said no.  Further questioning:  Is it because you like the nurses?  No.   Is it because you like the doctors?  No.    Is it because you like the medicine? No.  What do you like?  Videos and Food.  Owen is still scheduled to go home this afternoon.

Wednesday 3/12/03 -  11:30 AM  Owen had his tests this morning of a spinal tap, an injection of chemo into his spinal fluids and a bone marrow aspiration.  It looks like he may have contracted the chicken pox so he has been quarantined in a new room.  He had a roommate for just one night (from  Huntington Beach as well).  He has been feeling pretty good and enjoyed more bacon this morning.  Owen is still scheduled to go home this afternoon as long as he continues to have no fever.  Prayer Requests: That his tests show that his leukemia cells are being eradicated, that he continues to have no fever.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Tuesday 3/11/03 -5:30 PM - Owen has had a great day.  He spent some time online checking out the Thomas the Tank Engine site.  He had fun naming each train as they appeared on the screen.  He got a new roommate this afternoon.  His name is Danny and he is also from HB.  Grandpa Jay drove down to visit.

Tuesday 3/11/03 -12:30 PM Today is Owen's 7th day of chemo, so all his leukemia cells should be gone and he should officially be in remission.  He is being taken off the antibiotics today.  Tomorrow morning he has a spinal tap scheduled as well as a bone marrow aspiration.  Owen is also scheduled to go home tomorrow.  Praise Report: Owen is in a very good mood, his appetite is doing very well (6 pieces of bacon from his hospital breakfast followed by 7 pieces from his Mom's breakfast delivery.  His legs are doing well, allowing another 2 laps around the halls, (good thing after all that bacon). He had a miniature movement so hopefully his swollen abdomen will be getting better soon.  Owen is back to thanking his nurses after each visit as he did during the first 2 days of his stay.    Prayer Reqests: Owen continues to be infection free.  That his ANC count (which measures his infection fighting ability) continues to go up.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Monday 3/10/03 - 5:30 PM - We've got some photos.  Owen has had a great day.  He moved out of the ICU and into the Oncology wing.  He's now closer to the playroom, so things are looking up.  The doctors expect him to stay through Wednesday.  There still has been no word on his chromosome report.  Please continue to pray that the report comes back normal.  Aunt Janelle is in town to help.  Taylor wants to express how wonderfully the people at 7Up have been to him and the family.  Many thanks.

Monday 3/10/03 - 11 AM - Uncle Tom has joined the no hair club as well.  Owen received platelets yesterday.  His next major chemo treatment will be on Wednesday.   He will not be going home today as hoped most likely due to his stomach distension.  (One of the side effects of some of  the medications.)    Praise report:  Owen's legs have not been hurting so much enabling him to take two laps around the halls (checking each time to see if the playroom was open yet).  He slept very well both Saturday and Sunday nights and is in great shape emotionally.  Happy and in very good spirits.  No fever.  Prayer request:  That Owen's stomach is relieved soon.  That he continues to be fever free.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Saturday 3/8/03 - 2 PM - Uncle Todd and Aunt Jessi had a great visit last night.  (Uncle Todd is in the no-hair club) Mindy stayed the night with Owen and wondered how Taylor fit in the portable bed as her feet dangled over the edge all night.  Owen had a room full of people his size, as Cole, Fischer, and Chandler came to play.  His spirits were up and remained up until his afternoon shot.  After the ordeal, he wanted to know if Mindy could go out and give the nurses a spanking.  She left the room and when she returned, Owen felt fine, knowing justice had been served.  He seems to really enjoy adults getting in trouble...especially if the adult is his Dad or one of his uncles.  Praise Report:  Owen made it through the rough IM shot.  He is taking his 12 daily medications very well.  No fever.  Prayer Requests:  That the weekend be peaceful and infection free.  That Taylor and Mindy prepare (physically and emotionally) for bringing and caring for Owen at home.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Friday 3/7/03 - 5:30 PM - Owen had a great time watching a Charlie Brown video that helps explain Leukemia.  At one point when Linus was sad for his sick friend, Owen told Mindy, "I'm not sad."  He continues to get great treatment from the staff at CHOC.  They received word that Owen's spinal tap revealed that there was no Leukemia in his spinal fluid.  That is terrific news.  Owen has not has a fever in two days and the doctor told them this afternoon that if Owen remains fever free over the weekend, he could go home on Monday.  Aunt Janelle and cousin Josh are heading in to town to help with Cole and Ella and be with the family.  On Saturday morning, Owen will receive his first intramuscular shot, which is usually quite uncomfortable. Prayer Requests: For protection from infection.  For bravery and minimal discomfort for the IM shot.  For a complete recovery.

Friday 3/7/03 - 3 PM - Owen had lots of visitors this afternoon.  He perked up and had some good laughs with Uncle Trent.  Taylor took Cole, who is 2, to Disneyland today.  Both were happy to be together, eating hot dogs. Taylor and Mindy's 12 week old baby girl, Ella, is with Grandma Karen most days.   It has been a difficult week, but everyone is doing fine, thanks to God's peace, the support of family and friends, and a few Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies.  Keep 'em coming.

Friday 3/7/03-12 noon- Uncle Travis has joined his nephews and brothers with a newly buzzed head.  Owen keeps rubbing his own new buzz and calls it "prickly thorns".  His room continues to fill with videos and toys. Thank you so much for helping make his stay more enjoyable.  Grandma Myrna has returned to Fresno after a three day stay including hospital visits and caring for baby Ella and Cole.   After a difficult and sleepless night  Owen ate a big breakfast of waffles, bacon and muffins while watching a soccer goals video with Dad.  Prayer requests: That Owen is freed of his fears, worries and self consciousness.  That the side effects of all his medications are minimal and go away soon, especially the one causing his low moods.  That his pain continues to be alleviated.  That Owen, Taylor and Mindy get plenty of rest.   That through this process, Owen can appreciate and learn more about Jesus.  That Owen has a complete recovery.  Praise report: There is less soreness in Owens legs and feet.  He has not been vomiting.  Mindy and Taylor are gladened by the overwhelming support shown at CBS and Nurture.  They are so thankful that they are part of such a large family of believers who love and support them through prayer.

Thursday 3/6/03 - 5 PM -Owen will be receiving more blood today conveniently through his new port as well as his daily chemo treatment.  Praise report: Owens fever is gone and it appears his infection is gone as well.  He is more comfortable today and in good spirits.  Owen is enjoying CHOC's play room.  Taylor and Mindy are happy with the care their son is receiving from Doctor Young and Doctor Neudorf.  Thanks for the numerous emails received.  They continue to lift Taylor and Mindy's spirits.   Prayer request: That Owen's good spirits continue.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Wednesday 3/5/03 - 5 PM - Well, the Marcus boys now all look like Uncle Trent.  Fischer, Cole, Taylor, and Owen all had their heads buzzed.  It was quite a party and all were smiling.

Wednesday 3/5/03 - 3 PM - Last night and this morning, Owen had a great time in the play room at CHOC.  He was very happy to play with some Thomas trains and Mr. Potatohead.  Taylor has been staying the night in the room with Owen, while Mindy sleeps at home and tends to Ella.  Grandmas Karen and Myrna have been a great help with watching the kids while Mindy is at CHOC.  Today, about 11 AM, Owen had the surgery to put in the "man hole" port.  The procedure was a success and lasted about 1 hour.  He has recovered fine.  He will receive more chemo this evening.  There may be some family haircuts to report in the near future.  Prayer Requests:  For Owen to be comfortable and pain-free.  That there be no adverse reaction to the chemo treatment.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Tuesday 3/4/03 - 3 PM - Owen is having a restful day.  When Trent went to visit him at lunch time, he was fast asleep with a ring of powdered sugar around his mouth (donuts) and his hand was still in the bag of chips.  Talk about sweet dreams.  Taylor has set up his room with ample seating, food sections, a video library, and artwork and family photos all around.  There have been some wonderful contacts with CHOC employees.  Thank you to those who have "made some calls."  Prayer Requests:  That Owen keep his temperature down.  That Taylor and Mindy will get good rest and be able to process all that is happening.  That Owen has a complete recovery.

Tuesday 3/4/03 -12 noon - Owen had his first chemotherapy treatment this morning via an injection in his spinal cord.  He also had a spinal tap to test his spinal fluids.   He is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning to install a port under the skin on his chest so he will be able to receive future chemo treatments as well as blood testing through that.   Owen is feeling good and getting ready to check out CHOC's playroom with Taylor.  Thank you for your continued prayers.

Monday 3/3/03 - 6 PM - Owen has been diagnosed with Leukemia (Pre-B ALL), which is the most common in children and has the highest cure rate.  Dr. Young (the blood doctor) was very encouraged by the results.  Tomorrow, Dr. Neudorf (the cancer doctor) will start the chemotherapy.  Owen's chemotherapy treatment will last about 2 1/2 years, with the most active treatment taking place in the next six months.  He has a week of aggressive treatment, starting with the Spinal Column.  His nausea and vomiting should be very limited.  He will not undergo radiation.  He will be released home as soon as his body is free of infection, which could be a matter of days.  If all goes well, the chemo treatment will wipe out the leukemia within a week and then the protocol will be one of maintenance and check-ups.  Prayer Requests:  Pray for Dr. Neudorf and his talents.  Pray that there is no leukemia in the Spinal Column (When Leukemia is recurring, it starts/returns in the Spinal Column).  Pray that there are no chromosomal abnormalities which would hinder proper treatment.  Pray that Owen has a complete recovery.

Monday 3/3/03 - 9 AM -  Owen had a bone marrow aspiration that took about 10 minutes.  Owen was sedated and comfortable.  He showed no signs of anxiety, pain, or discomfort during the procedure.  Dr. Young will be examining the bone marrow to determine the specifics of Owen's illness and how they should proceed in treatment.  Dr. Young expects to know more by tonight.  Prayer Requests:  That Owen remain comfortable.  That Taylor and Mindy remain at peace and receive wisdom and discernment in deciding Owen's course of treatment.  That Dr. Young maximize his talents in counseling Taylor and Mindy.  That Owen have a complete recovery.

Sunday 3/2/03 - Owen received platelets through a transfusion first thing in the morning.  He was talking a lot and enjoying his Harvey train and "A Bug's Life" video.  Taylor and Mindy then loaded up their car and drove straight to CHOC.  Harold and Karen drove with Cole and Ella.  Trent and Todd followed behind.  Valley Children's was a fantastic facility and Owen and the family received tip-top care.  They arrived at CHOC at about 4 pm and were admitted to the ICU, where they monitored Owen through the night.

Saturday 3/1/03 - Owen had transfusions throughout the day which gave him healthy red blood cells and platelets.  He grew stronger as the day went on.  His uncles, Don and Nick, as well as Grandma Myrna and Grandpa Jay kept him company.  Later in the day, they were joined by Uncles Trent & Todd,  and Grandpa Harold & Grandma Karen.  Owen rested most of the day.  He had great color and his lip had healed considerably.  His fever broke early in the day.

Friday 2/28/03 - The Marcus family headed up to the Fresno area to spend the weekend in Clovis and celebrate the engagement of Donnie and Kristina.  By mid-afternoon, Owen was quite lethargic and had a high fever.  His lip had been bleeding and appeared puffy.  Myrna looked up his symptoms in a medical book and they knew they should have him looked at in a hospital.  About 8 pm, They took Owen to Valley Children's Hospital and he was preliminarily diagnosed with a Leukemia type disease.
